*sings in falsetto*
“ICE…..I.C.E. feels so… nice. …”

That’s my jam!! lol I was scrolling through my Instagram (@leopardkissez) to see Ms.Kelly was serving up something fierce on The View today. Click here for a recap. She also did a performance with Big Boi of Outkast. Not only does she have remarkable talent but she always looks so well put together. She can rock any hairstyle from her short coif during her Destiny’s Child days to big voluminous ‘natural’ curls to long flowing tresses. Her new album Year of the Woman is due out early next year. She opened up about her new album during an interview with Sister2Sister Magazine. Kelly is on top of the world these days with her hit single ICE, and I wish her much more success in the New Year! 🙂

The new miracle oil? Benefits of Apricot Oil

I know what you’re thinking….not another oil!! LOL If you are a part of the natural hair community, you probably have your fair share of oils already. Some of the more popular oils are; extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), extra virgin coconut oil (EVCO), and jojoba oil. There are MANY more, not to mention essential oils. If you aren’t to familiar with essential oils check out this article.

Get to the apricot oil whudya!” Ok ok! 🙂

Recently I’ve decided to ‘simplify’ my hair care regimen (more info to come) as much as possible. While on this journey I came across Apricot Oil. My original intentions were to purchase a big bottle of sweet almond oil and use nothing else but that. Then I saw this bottle on the shelf at my local health food store.

120812183420

I read the label 100% moisturizing oil–treat dry hair. Hmmmmmm…….and the price was right too! Retailing at less than $7 for 16 oz I say it was worth a shot. Since then I have consistently used this oil to seal my hair. I can honestly say I have noticed softer more manageable hair, and not to mention the shine! Could this be my new ‘miracle oil’?? Here are some of the benefits of Apricot Oil that I found on the web.

“Heated apricot oil has been has been long used as a hair treatment to restore shine and lost nutrients to dry or damaged hair. Essential fatty acids help restore softness to hair. Simply mix a few drops into shampoo, or rub a few drops between your palms then through hair.” (Quote provided by eHow.com)

“Rich in essential  fatty acids like oleic and linoleic, apricot kernel oil is high in vitamin A. Since it easily penetrates the skin, it is good for prematurely aged, dry or irritated skin. The excellent softening and moisturizing properties is great for face, hands, and hair.” (Quote provided by healthguidance.org)

I have yet to use this oil for my face or body. The oil is very light in texture similar to jojoba oil. But moisturizing like EVOO, and provides sheen like EVCO. Darcy’s Botanicals also sells this oil with a light fragrance on her website here.

Natural Kids: Wash Day/Detangling–Make it easier for her and you!

Mommy nooooooo!!!!!! *chases child around room with comb*

Does this setting sound familiar to you? As a kid with a lot of hair, my mom (and aunts) were often overwhelmed with my hard to manage hair. Tired arms and tears where the norm. Well those days are no more with simple practices that can make washing her precious curls a breeze!

These are the tools you will need

120812183317-1

Grab some toys, coloring books, and movies they will help keep your little princess occupied. Snacks are great too! TAKE BREAKS if she begins to get antsy let her stretch and grab a drink of water. You want this experience to run as smoothly as possible.

Finger detangling is your best friend!! Spraying a conditioner mix (w/plain H2O) will help “melt” those tangles and knots. The conditioner I used (pictured above) is a cheap conditioner by VO5  I found at Meijer. You can use whatever you have on hand.

1. Saturate hair with conditioner mix.

2.  Section hair in workable sections and secure with hair clips

3. Working one section at a time. Begin separating any tangles or knots with ONLY your fingers.

4. GENTLY comb out any further tangles with a shower comb or paddle brush. If you run into a ‘trouble’ area STOP combing and work out the tangle with your fingers and proceed with the comb.

5. Braid (I find that these stay together better than twist) the detangled section.

6. Continue until entire head is detangled.

I found a great YouTube channel GirlsLoveYourCurls that has some great ino and styles for your little curly! Check out her Facebook page too here.

Just bare with me in the mean time in between time. (hehe) So what better way to make a “come back” then with a OOTD post right?! My first love is definitely fashion. I posted this pic on my facebook page, but you need details right?! I gotchu boo!

Mixed Silk Curly Gel- A Closer Look; You will be surprised!

Good evening ladies and gents! I have been on a rampage! The last few days I have released my inner PJ and purchased so many hair products! In all honesty it was my birthday treat to myself lol because I have not indulged in quite some time. It felt good to release and just buy want I want!!! But I’ll get back to that later and let you know what I picked up 🙂 But it was one product in particular that I was sooo anxious to try. MIXED SILK CURLY GEL!!!  I love the deep conditioner with all of my heart and soul! So it was the icing on the cake to see they add a gel! There is also the shampoo and leave-in I’m not 100% sold on the leave-in just yet.

So while patrolling the hair sites I decided to visit TightlyCurly.com I came across this site ages ago but never really visited too often. I really like the ingredient list she provides. She THOROUGHLY breaks down the ingredient and whether it’s harmful for your hair or not. Anyway I sat here thinking, hmmmm let me check out this gel….and look what I found…..

Water

Hydroxyethylcellulose
Okay
Thickener made from plants, often used as an emulsifier. This is known to be very mild, even in high concentrations [Hunting (Conditioning) pgs 239-240].
Source(s): Hunting http://www.cosmeticscop.com/
Pectin
Her website didn’t list the ingredient. But this link here talks about how it’s found in KCCC and it’s used in a lot of homemade gels.

Fragrance

Diazolidinyl urea
Caution
Preservative that has had some controversy for being a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. Often used as a pesticide in the cotton industry, and to kill microbes for cosmetics. The CIR Expert Panel found it to be safe for use in cosmetics so long as its concentration is below 0.5 percent of the product. May cause skin irritation (as all preservatives can to some degree). [Winter pg 197].

Diazolidinyl urea is a fine white powder that’s soluble in water. Works best against molds and yeasts, and it’s known to be stable over many pHs. It needs to be used with other preservatives, such as parabens, to insure that all types of fungi are killed [Hunting (Conditioning) pg 179].

Disodium EDTA
Okay
Chelating ingredient that attracts the minerals away from the hair shaft and helps them rinse away. Good to use after swimming.
See also: Chelating agent
Source(s): Begoun
Benzyl benzoate
Okay
Often added to make a hard product more flexible, such as in nail polishes. Benzyl benzoate occurs naturally in Balsam Peru and Balsam Tolu, as well as other oils from flowers. It’s a clear oily liquid, or can be in white crystals. It has a light floral scent [Winter pg 103-104].
Source(s): Winter

Alright everything appears to be ok BUT the Diazolidinyl urea??? A formaldehyde-releasing preservative??? What in the world?

I found an article via safecosmetics.org (for the full article click here) explaining the history behind the ingredient. It has been more commonly found in hair smoothing products. hmmm…..the article then goes on to say it’s found in a wide variety of hair products, body washes, and cosmetics. After time the low levels have been linked to skin irritation and maybe cancer. I’m no scientist and I have not conducted a THOROUGH research. I’m not so sure about this now. This accidental post turned out to be pretty informative. I hope it was helpful to you as well. As most products marketed towards natural, the ingredients are everything BUT natural!

*Disclaimer*
If you have serious concerns about this ingredient please do your research. This post was to raise awarness of what is in the gel.
